Paws flew across the land in the canine's sure haste. Atsu was running at full speed, not wanting to waste even the slightest of energies as he ran at the side of the lake, searching for food. It had been at least a week since the hound have had anything that could be called food, he had chewed at the grass as he made his way towards the treacherous lake, always keeping a steady pace to conserve his ever dropping strength. But as his eyes caught sight of the lake, at first a glittering spot in the middle of a grass field the canine had felt hope. Now as he had advanced nearer and nearer to the glittering spot of blue he could clearly sea the blue of the water. He has switched from his easy going yet fast trot that he could keep for hours to his frantic run that could be just as easily be confused for an arrow shooting through the grass.
Atsu was not only agile, but incredibly fast, what he lacked in strength he completely made up with his enormous speed. He was a tall muscular canine, but of course his kind was known for their tracking abilities, to no surprise the Pharaoh hound was as well a keen tracker. He slowed his madding pace when he began feeling difficulty in the way the oxygen surged to his lungs, going at an easy walk. His sides heaved and occasionally as he exhaled a wheeze would escape his muzzle. He could see the lake now, to his dismay he could smell something strange in it and it took him a good time to realize that the smell was contamination. The dog groaned loudly and he prayed that at least part of the lake would be free from the waste.
Atsu was very familiar with the problems the humans caused with the environment, as a stray his parents had taught him well to watch closely for signs that humans had made the area a wasteland. He stopped, halting his steps a few feet from the like, his tongue lolling out and his sides heaving from the exertion of the last run. Atsu waited until he could breathe with his mouth closed before he even dared to take a step towards the lake. The process took longer than he thought as he tired body struggled to get enough oxygen through the canines body and as the velocity of his panting ceased, he still had to hold his mouth open. His breathe floated like mist above him and he realized that the cold made the prey in the lake less, but right now he thanked nature for leaving the lake without ice, though he suspected that it was the deadly human waste.
When he could finally close his mouth and breathe properly the dog took slow steps towards the lake, his head hanging low as he took careful judgment of the plants that surrounded him. He nose wrinkled and he snorted occasionally registering every scent that surrounded him. As he neared the lake the first thing that he noticed was a silvery spot in its surface. The silver caught every bit of sunlight and shot rainbows in every direction.
Atsu blinked unsure what would cause such an event. Surely normal lakes didn't do that? He was about to drag his paws closer to the lake when he noticed the dead fish. He stopped, frozen where he was and blinked curiously at the dead fish. Silvery scales covered its body, but it was unusual for so many fish to float dead in one place. One dead fish wouldn't have stopped him, he would have considered it luck, but several. He took a deep breath and noticed the stagnant air. He blinked his purple eyes trying to guess the meaning of this. Than he remembered the scent of human waste he caught when he came nearby the lake.
Disgusted the canine snorted and took a step back from the lake. His eyes fixed on the glittering spot, he snorted again as he realized what the silvery spot was. Lips pulled back to reveal ivory teeth, he silently cursed the humans and moved on to another spot where there was no "silver spots" this time hoping he would get something to eat that wasn't infected. He was well aware of the thread the silver spots posted, the fish could be infected, but he was hungry, no starving would describe better how the hound was feeling and he wasn't going to let food get away.
